Saturday Racing Tips - Cox Plate 28/10/23

Who will emerge victorious in the 2023 Cox Plate at The Valley?

Few Australian races attract the global attention of the Cox Plate and once again in 2024, it should be a grand spectacle at the Valley. Voted ‘Australia’s best horse race’, the Cox Plate will be generating plenty of traction with the biggest and best betting apps

The magnitude of the Cox Plate cannot be underestimated, and it is one of the biggest races of the season for both Aussie bookmakers and Aussie punters.

Race 5: Crystal Mile

The diversity of the excellent 10-race card at the Valley on 28th October is exemplified by the 1600m dash in race 5 for the Crystal Mile. With some serious speedsters in the mix, the Group 2 contest is a favourite with punters and Aussie bookmakers alike.

Just the 6 horses have been declared for the 2023 incarnation of the Crystal Mile but all in the parade ring can make legitimate claims of going all the way in this one. With a healthy $300,000 prize pot too, there is plenty on the line here in race 5 at Moonee Valley.

Crystal Mile

Having just 6 horses in contention does open up plenty of opportunities for punters, with all potentially having strong claims here over the 1600m trip.

Topping the ante-post betting is Tuvalu, a horse that has consistently performed for connections, bagging almost A$2 million in career prize money.

With very question marks over the trip or suitability, Tuvalu is the justified favourite for this one at $2.80 with Playup

Key competition comes in the form of Antino, a New Zealand horse that has been quietly going about its business over the past few seasons. Whilst relatively inexperienced in comparison to Tuvalu, Antino has picked up some seriously impressive results of late and appears to have pace to burn, bringing it firmly into the mix at $2.90 with Bet365

Raced over 1600m, the Crystal Mile does look to be a good fit for all of the horses in the paddock here and both Prowess and Mustang Valley have strong claims here. Both horses also originate from New Zealand and have adapted well to life on the Australian horse racing scene and both cannot be discarded at $4.00 and $11.00 respectively with Punterspal.

Race 8: Manikato Stakes

Group 1 contests continue to flood the 10-race Cox Plate card at the Valley and the Manikato Stakes promises to be another blockbuster encounter. Raced over just 1200m, it is one of the quickest contests on the calendar and once again, there are plenty of horses that have peaked the interests of both old and new betting sites alike.

With A$2 million in the prize pot and some valuable Group 1 race win points on offer too, the 2023 incarnation of the Manikato Stakes should make for thrilling viewing.

In a race such as this, form and knowhow are often the most important factor and when it comes to getting over the line in 1st place, few are better in the business currently than Imperatriz.

The Mark Walker trained 5-year-old has a supreme record over any distance around the 1200m mark and is a multiple time course and distance winner at the Valley.

Competition for this one will be stronger than in some previous outings but Imperatriz is a generational horse in terms of speed and it will be difficult to stop at $1.45 with Punterspal.
Plenty of experienced horses will be laying down the gauntlet to Imperatriz, with the likes of Buenos Noches looking to be the key competition. An underwhelming outing at Royal Randwick last time out has undoubtedly moved Buenos Noches down the betting card for this one but the 4-year-old has an excellent record, especially around the 1200m mark.

Catching Imperatriz is no easy task but Buenos Noches certainly has an unpredictable performance in the locker at $7.00 with Playup

Elsewhere, the likes of Uncommon James and I Am Me have both recorded well over A$1 million in career prize money and they will be two horses that could turn it on at any stage here. Reservations lie in whether they can keep pace with Imperatriz, but they should both be considered at $7.50 apiece with Bet365.

Race 9: Cox Plate

The biggest race of the 2023 Australian horse racing calendar so far is the headline act at Moonee Valley, with the Cox Plate sure to capture the hearts and minds of punter and bookmaker alike.

As one of the biggest races in the world, the magnitude of the Cox Plate needs no introduction. Ran over 2040m, the Group 1 contest has been on the Australian horse racing calendar for almost 200 years.

With an increased prize pool of A$5 million and a cool 3 million of that going to the winner, the 2023 Cox Plate promises to be another incredible spectacle at The Valley on 28th October.

Topping the betting is Romantic Warrior, an Irish horse that looks to have been cultivated especially for contests such as these and with the best part of $A15 million of career prize money bagged, it is certainly a horse for the big occasion.

Flemington last time out was an underwhelming pre-cursor to the Cox Plate, but Romantic Warrior tends to step it up when it matters most and is the hot favourite for 2023 Cox Plate glory at $4.00 with Bet365

They are queuing up behind in the betting, with Alligator Blood seen as the next best in terms of winning credentials. A horse that tends to get the job more often than not, Alligator Blood has triumphed in both the Might and Power Stakes and the Underwood Stakes this season and should be raring to go here.

It will be a fascinating contest, with Alligator Blood sure to be in the mix at $6.00 with Playup

The strength of the field is exemplified by the other runners that are set to challenge here, with Mr Brightside and Fangirl – two of the hottest prospects this season, confined to mid-table in the betting. Both horses have picked up Group 1 wins this term, over similar distances and they should both be seriously looked at for Cox Plate glory at $7.50 and $9.00 respectively with Punterspal
