What is Live Betting?

At a basic level, Live betting is all about placing bets on a game while it’s happening. It’s pretty popular in Australia, but there are some rules to keep in mind.

In Australia, you can’t place live bets online because of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. But that’s ok, you can still do it over the phone. To get around the online ban, you can call in your bets while the game is on. All the major betting sites have phone operators for this.

It’s possible to live bet on heaps of sports like Footy, Cricket, Tennis, Basketball and more. Odds change fast during live betting because they’re updated based on what’s happening in the game. It’s exciting but also a bit risky if you’re not used to it.

How to Place a Live Bet:

  • Pick a Betting Site: Choose a good site or app.
  • Sign Up: Make an account and verify your details.
  • Find Live Bets: Go to the live betting section, sometimes it’s called in-play.
  • Call In Your Bet: Use the phone number provided to place your bet.
  • Watch the Game: Keep an eye on the event and see how your bet goes.

Top Australian Live Betting Sites

There are plenty of top Australia live betting sites and that’s the point of this section. I’ll run through a few sites that I like using and I think you will too.

Bet365

Bet365 is one of my top live betting sites and let me explain why. Firstly, I love their interface for live betting, it’s super easy to follow and I can see what’s happening in any sport. It’s all available on the “in-play” page. At the top of the page, they have a filter for each sport. At any given time, there can be over 10 sports, which many sites can’t compete with.

At Bet365, you can live bet on popular markets like Horse Racing, Soccer, Tennis, Baseball and Basketball. There are also a lot of niche sports such as Badminton, Futsal and Handball. That’s pretty rare in Australia. They also provide a “favourite” feature, where I can click on a star and this sport will show in my favourites list. But to top it off, Bet365 live streaming is massive. You can pretty much watch anything on this site, even NBA or MLB. Along with advanced stats during the game / event, Australia live betting is truly a great option at Bet365, in my view.

Unibet

Another site that I like for live betting is Unibet. I can easily view live betting odds on this site in a nicely designed layout. They include a handy filter for each sport at the top of the page. At any time, there will be Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball and even niche sports like Table Tennis or Esports.

You can even click into an individual game and view advanced stats. Using Tennis as an example, you can see who’s won the first set or how the scoring has gone in each game of the set. Kudos to Unibet, this is really advanced and should make live betting super easy.

There’s also live streaming available, which is always a nice combo for live bets. If live streaming is available, there will be a video icon next to the event. In my experience, they usually live stream Tennis, Soccer and even Baseball (MLB). Overall, this is an excellent live betting website that I think you should check out.

Topsport

Topsport is one of the top live betting sites that’s Aussie owned and operated. It’s all available from the “in-play” menu. There’s a filter for each sport at the top so you can drill down into your favourite sport, for example.

They usually have live odds for popular sports such as Soccer, Baseball, Basketball and more. It’s not the largest if you compare it to Unibet or Bet365, but it’s still pretty decent. It’s simple to bet live too. All you need to do is click on the odds and a popup will display the phone number that you need to call.

PlayUp

PlayUp has recently added live betting markets, which is great to see. Simply click on live betting in their main menu and you’ll be presented with all the live betting markets. They generally have the most popular sports at this site, including Soccer, Basketball, Baseball and more. There are not many niche sports but I don’t think that’s a massive issue for most punters.

Each live betting market comes with a lot of different options. Such as a Baseball game can have handicap, total, innings, margin, correct score, double and more. It’s similar for Soccer. You can bet on over 20 markets, such as head to head, total goals, correct score, anytime goalscorer and a whole lot more. If you want to learn about this Aussie bookie, our PlayUp review is worth checking out.

Live Betting Sites Sports & Markets

Live betting on AFL and other sports in Australia can be a truly fun experience. So in this section, I’ll discuss which sports can give you the best opportunities to bet live.

Live AFL

In Australia, I would say that AFL is one of the most popular live sports to bet on. Comebacks can be massive in Aussie Rules. Just use Round 16 in 2001 when the Bombers were down by 69 points and ended up winning by 2 goals. Imagine if you live bet on the Bombers to win? You would look like a genius and the profits would be very nice. That’s the benefit of live bets.

So momentum is huge in the AFL and that’s where live betting is recommended. The odds will change a lot as the game goes and you’ll usually get a lot better odds than what was available pre-game. Usually, the best time to bet live at AFL betting sites is after the quarter ends or at half-time. I say this because the coach can make adjustments during this time, which can lead to improvements by the team to get back in the game if they’re losing. Get into the action with live betting on AFL, you’ll enjoy it I reckon.

Live NRL

NRL betting sites give you the opportunity to bet on live NRL games during the season and finals. Similarly to AFL, Rugby league games can change in no time. For example, the biggest comeback in NRL history is 26 points and it’s been achieved three times. Most recently by the Dolphins in 2023 against the Titans. While in a Grand Final, the Panthers broke the record for the largest comeback (16 points) in the 2023 decider against the Broncos.

Live betting markets for Rugby League generally include head to head betting, next try-scorer, margin, total and more. I would recommend live betting at half-time as the coach can make adjustments and the team might come out and play better. So you can get better odds around this time. Also, picking the next try-scorer comes with a lot of value odds, but of course, the probability is low.

Live Soccer

There’s a huge range of Soccer leagues around the globe and as a result, live betting is popular in this sport. Barcelona holds the record for the largest comeback in the sport. In 2017, they scored 3 goals in 7 minutes in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. So if you bet on that live, the odds would have been massive.

Live betting markets for Soccer usually include head to head, next to score, total goals, player props and more. Soccer live betting can be good after half-time, especially if a team is losing and comes out firing. It’s also good near the end of the match when fatigue becomes a factor.

Live NBA

Basketball is fast-paced and in the NBA, there have been plenty of huge comebacks. In 1996, the Utah Jazz broke the record for the largest comeback after they were down 70-36 at half-time and won 107-103 in the end. Imagine if you bet on the Jazz at half-time? The odds would have been huge.

Live betting markets in the NBA are usually decent and plentiful. You can bet on head to head winner, line, total points, player props, next basket and a whole lot more. As Basketball is high-paced, I think live betting can give you a lot of good odds if your timing is right.

Live NFL

The National Football League (NFL) is another sport where live betting is definitely popular. Similarly to other sports, comebacks can be huge in American Football. The Minnesota Vikings currently hold the record for the biggest comeback in the league, storming home against the Colts after they were down by 33 pts. In the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots, led by the goat Tom Brady, successfully overcame a 28-3 deficit against the Falcons in 2017, which is considered one of the greatest comebacks in any sport.

When it comes to live betting markets in the NFL, the options are usually excellent. There’s head to head, line, total points, player props, next touchdown scorer and more. I would say that live bets in the NFL can be better at half-time as the coach can make adjustments to the gameplan. But I don’t think there’s a “best” time to bet live as NFL games can change at any time.

Live Betting Sites Features

Now that we’ve discussed which sports are ideal for live bets in Australia, it’s time to think about what features you’ll need. In my experience, features can take your live betting Australia experience to another level and here’s a quick overview of the best ones.

  • In-Play Betting Markets - Live in-play betting markets and odds make it a lot easier to bet live.
  • Live Streaming - Combine the fun of live betting with live streaming. Many sites offer live streaming of sports in Australia such as Bet365 or Unibet.
  • User Friendly Betting Interface - It goes without saying but a user-friendly betting interface just makes things easier. Make sure the bet slip process is fast and easy to follow.
  • Cash Out - This can be handy for live betting if you want to take the money before the bet potentially loses.
  • Mobile Apps - If you’re not near a computer, betting on a mobile app is the next best thing. Make sure the app is quick, regularly updated and makes live betting easy as. Check our list of best betting apps for more info.
  • Promotions / Bonuses - Not the biggest thing in Australia for live betting just yet but betting sites bonuses are something to consider as well.
