Saturday Racing Tips - Underwood Stakes 23/09/23

The Australian horse racing season is in full flow and the 99th hosting of the Underwood Stakes is the key draw at Caulfield on Saturday 23rd September.

Alongside the obvious appeal of the Group 1 Underwood Stakes is the accompanying 10-race card and there is plenty to get behind with the biggest and best Aussie bookmakers.

With 10 races to pick from at Caulfield on Saturday, choosing the best cards is no easy task. The Testa Rossa Stakes in race 6 stands out with some high-quality operators in the field and a healthy A$175,000 in the prize pot.

The Testa Rossa Stakes throws up some fascinating narratives in race 6, with plenty of horses fancied with different betting apps, but a clear favourite within the betting markets. 

4-year old Amenable is a prolific performer at this level and despite its relative youth, it is a horse that can certainly mix it with the more experienced offerings in the field.

Whilst a 5th place over course and distance doesn’t look too significant, it was a ride that showcased the many talents of Amenable and it is the hot favourite to come out on top in the Testa Rossa Stakes at $1.75 with Playup.

Key competition in this race comes in the form of Bandersnatch, a horse that has certainly been around the block but is still operating from a rating of 105. Conditions will suit and it has been seen at Caulfield recently in a decent showing and whilst it will have to be at its best to beat Amenable, Bandersnatch certainly can’t be discarded here at $5.00 with Bet365.

There are plenty with claims in this one too, with a fair few horses with decent wins in the bag previously in their career but Kiwi runner Savannah Cloud could be worth a stab at $12.00 with Punterspal.

The Guineas at Caulfield is one of the biggest races of the season and the Prelude this weekend is certainly catching the attention of old and new betting sites alike.

A race for 3-year-olds only, the Caulfield Guineas Prelude is often a speedy one, with punters able to keep an eye on some of the most exciting talents around and with A$300,000 in the prize pot, there is plenty to get on board with here.

The prospect of the Guineas at Caulfield later in the campaign certainly gets the attention of punters and Aussie bookmakers and once again in 2023, the build up race of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude is creating plenty of betting traction.

Speed will be key in this one and the unbeaten Steparty is one of the quickest horses in Australia currently. The 3-year-old has won all 4 of its starts professionally and it looks to have the raw materials to compete in a race such as this.

Steparty is the hot favourite in the Guineas Prelude, coming in at $2.60 with Punterspal. 

Next up in the betting is Veight, a horse that is undergoing similar stages of development and is perhaps a little better versed in the nuances of the Caulfield track. Having won over course and distance last time out, Veight certainly has a strong claim here, with a 75% winning race record so far in its fledgling career.

This could be a seriously good race to watch and Veight is certainly in with a shout at $3.60 with Playup.

Plenty of other speedsters in this contest should be in the mix and the inexperience of the field could open up the betting. Scentify and Scheelite are the two with biggest claims and they can be backed at decent prices of $8.00 and $10.00 respectively with Bet365.

Group 1 racing is always what makes the headlines and once again at Caulfield, it is the Underwood Stakes that has punters and bookmakers moving and shaking.

The 99th edition of the race promises to be another fascinating battle, with plenty of horses from Australia and beyond looking to get their hands on the A$750,000 prize purse.

2022 Underwood Stakes winner Alligator Blood is the hot favoruite to go back to back in 2023 and few would bet against it. Losing out to Mr Brightside in its last two outings cannot be seen as a disappointment and this looks to be another chance to put a win on the board for connections.

Alligator Blood is $3.50 to get over the line here with Bet365, and it will take some stopping. 

Irish hopes are represented in the form of Without A Fight, another prolific performer at this level – who does look to be transitioning to Australian racing very seamlessly.

Coming off the back of two excellent wins will do Without A Fight the world of good ahead of this one and whilst Alligator Blood is a tough opponent, Without A Fight certainly won’t go down without one at $5.00 with Playup.

Plenty of top quality horses make up the field here in the Underwood Stakes, and some of the runners have a superb track record in races such as this. Tuvalu and Attrition are two top quality operators, that will certainly have more than a chance of upsetting the applecart in this one.
