Saturday Racing Tips - Flemington 17/02/24

Few races in Australia get punters moving more than the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and once again in 2024, it should be a superb day at Flemington, with plenty of big bets available with Aussie bookmakers.

There are 10 very high-quality contests at Flemington on Saturday, all of which are intriguing and enticing all punters and Aussie bookmakers. Race 7 is packed with some of the very best 3-year-olds around, as they chase glory in the CS Hayes Stakes and some valuable Autumn prize money.  
 
CS Hayes Stakes 

When the biggest and best 3-year-olds in the country go head to head, there is always a sense of great anticipation, and the CF Hayes Stakes promises to deliver exactly that on Saturday. Ran over just 1400m, speed will be key and there are some extremely quick horses in a very open looking field here. 

Topping the betting is King Colorado, a horse that has shown plenty of promise for Ciaron Maher and there are seriously high hopes for it moving forwards. A good run at Caulfield just a couple of weeks ago has enhanced that view and it is the market leader here at $3.20 with Playup. 

Part of the beauty with a contest such as this is the opportunity for a relative outsider to come in and completely steal the show. Kiwi flyer Otago has burst onto the scene in recent weeks, winning both career races and is now a front runner in a lucrative race such as this.

On raw potential, Otago should be in the mix here and it is one to watch at $4.80 with Bet365. 

Beyond that, there are some very impressive horses firmly in the mix, with the likes of Riff Rocket and Verdad possessing proven track records at this level and they are both worth a serious look at $7.00 and $11.00 respectively with Punterspal. 

The big race of a very busy day at Flemington is the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes and all of the biggest players in the game are after a piece of Group 1 glory. With A$1m in the prize pot, the stakes are huge and it has been a race long touted by both punters and old and new betting sites.

Intensity and intrigue always ramps up a notch when it is a Group 1 race and that is very much the case here, as the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes captures the hearts and minds of punters and Aussie bookmakers once more. 

All of the pre-race and ante-post market talk has been about Imperatriz, a prolific horse that has collected over A$5m in prize money and looks to be very much in its prime. Winning over a slightly longer 1200m at the back end of 2023 here at Flemington suggests that Imperatriz is the one to beat here and that has been reflected in the betting odds of $1.95 with Punterspal.  

Quality horses assemble in pursuit, with Private Eye next in the betting, a horse very much proven at this level. Now aged 6, Private Eye has been around the block a little but it is a horse that knows how to get the job done and it is certainly worth monitoring at a healthy $5.00 with Playup. 

The big names just keep on coming here, with Bella Nipotina and I Am Unstoppable both having genuine claims to win this race and both can be backed at a very enticing $7.50 with Bet365.

So unrelenting is the nature of the day at Flemington on Saturday, that many would be forgiven for scanning over race 9 on the race card but The Elms Handicap promises to be an absolute cracker. With A$175,000 up for grabs, there is plenty to get involved with and it should be a proper ding-dong battle.  
 
The Elms Handicap 

Some very impressive horses line up here for The Elms Handicap, a race that has been a breeding ground for some hugely successful horses in the past and this should be a very good contest at Flemington. 

The horse to beat seemingly is Jimmysstar, the Kiwi flyer that has caught the eye throughout 2024 and who continues to grow in stature. Craig Williams on board should be the perfect ride, with inexperience the only question mark but if he gets up ahead of steam, Jimmysstar should be the one to catch at $1.60 with Bet365. 

In behind in the betting is Ka Bling, another exciting horse who hasn’t been showing its best form of late but who has mixed it with the big guns successfully before. This should be a good fit for Ka Bling, and it looks to be a decent price at $8.60 with Playup. 

Both Crosshaven and Carini have won races of this magnitude in the past and whilst the youth of Jimmysstar could prove tough to stop, both horses should be firmly in the mix here at $12.00 and $14.00 respectively with Punterspal.
