AFL 2023 Round 22 – Betting tips & Predictions

AFL 2023 Round 22
AFL 2023 Round 22

Table topping Collingwood continued to falter in AFL game week 22, losing to Hawthorn, proof if ever it was needed that anything can happen when it comes to AFL betting.

Elsewhere, Melbourne and Carlton are both gathering speed and finding form, but they face off this weekend, whilst Port Adelaide are hoping to cling on to their top 4 position.

With so much to play for at both ends of the table, there are plenty of good bets and odds to be had with the major AFL betting apps and it promises to be another superb weekend of AFL action.

Team vs Team

Collingwood will be eager to get back to winning ways as they host Geelong. It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Magpies, but they will want to forget about them and kick on between now and the end of the season.

Geelong meanwhile are still in the mix for a playoff spot, residing in 9th but their inconsistencies have hampered them at times this season and they do find it tougher on the road.

This should be a really good game and whilst Geelong will trouble Collingwood, the hosts should get over the line here.

North Melbourne vs Essendon

Two sides needing to win for different reasons face off, as North Melbourne host Essendon. Two wins from a bleak campaign isn’t the return North Melbourne and their fans were looking for and they desperately need to address their lack of form sooner rather than later.
Essendon meanwhile did edge out the West Coast Eagles last weekend, but they have dropped out of the playoff picture currently and they find themselves languishing down in 12th in the AFL table.
This doesn’t look set to be a classic, but Essendon should get the job done.

Sydney vs Gold Coast

Another pair of sides with their playoff status out of their own hands is Sydney and Gold Coast, who face off at the SCG.

The Sydney Swans have improved markedly over the past few weeks, winning their last 4 fixtures to make a statement with many small betting sites. Sydney are still in the mix for a playoff spot but need to win games such as these. For Gold Coast, the playoff landscape looks even more distant, but they will be eager to finish the campaign as strongly as possible.

There should be plenty of points out there in this one, with Sydney most likely to get the job done.

Brisbane vs Adelaide

Brisbane host Adelaide, with the Lions doing all they can to secure their top 4 spot as quickly as possible.

It has been an excellent campaign for Brisbane, who sit 3rd in the table and finishing inside that top quadrant would give them a favourable playoff draw.

Adelaide meanwhile lie 11th and with 3 wins and 3 losses from their last 6 games, inconsistency has blighted their season throughout.

This will be tighter than the odds suggest but Brisbane are a high scoring side who should get over the line here

Carlton vs Melbourne

The headline fixture on another chaotic weekend of AFL action is Carlton vs Melbourne. No side looks capable of stopping Carlton currently, with 7 consecutive wins under their belt and they have moved up to 5th place in the AFL table as a result.

Melbourne meanwhile sit 2nd in the table, enjoying a hefty winning run of their own and they will be doing all they can to cling on to their top 4 spot.

This should be an absolute belter, between two sides with no love lost but Carlton should ultimately get the job done in this one.

West Coast vs Fremantle

The West Coast Derby is always a classic and once again in 2023, it has plenty of AFL betting sites purring.

Basement dwellers West Coast have just 2 wins to their name this season but there are signs that things are beginning to improve at the Eagles this term.

Fremantle meanwhile have huffed and puffed this season, without necessarily getting the rewards and their playoff bid looks to have petered out somewhat.

This should be a good one, with plenty on the line and West Coast could spring a serious surprise here.

Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs

Having overcome Collingwood last weekend, Hawthorn will be chasing another major scalp as they take on the Western Bulldogs.

The Hawks were good value for their win against Collingwood and whilst they won’t make the playoffs, they will want to finish the season as strongly as possible.

Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs are moving along steadily, and they have their playoff destiny very much in their own hands, sat in 6th with 3 games to play.

Hawthorn will be up for this, but the Western Bulldogs should have too much in the tank.

St Kilda vs Richmond

Two more sides with work to do if they are to penetrate the playoff picture do battle, as St Kilda take on Richmond.

Things have taken a turn for the worse at St Kilda in recent weeks and they have slipped out of the top 8, losing form at the worst possible time.

Richmond meanwhile are a side that just cannot seem to generate any consistency and they too have a mountain to climb if they are to finish inside the top 8.

Calling this one is tough, with neither side in great nick but perhaps St Kilda will just be able to get over the line.

Port Adelaide vs GWS Giants

The final game of the round pits two playoff chasing sides against each other in Port Adelaide and the GWS Giants.

Port Adelaide have lost their last 3, seeing them slip down to 4th in the AFL table but they still have their top 4 destiny very much in their own hands and plenty of quality in their ranks.

The GWS Giants meanwhile, had won their last 7 before losing out to local rivals Sydney last weekend, a defeat they will want to bounce back from very quickly.

There is very little between these sides, both on paper and on the oval but it could be the home advantage that gets the Port Adelaide Suns over the line here.
