  • 5-year-old flyer Overpass cantered home in the 2024 Kia Quokka.
  • Joshua Parr steered Overpass to victory over the 1200m trip at Ascot.
  • The Quokka is one of the most lucrative races in Australia, with A$5 million in the prize pot.
  • Onlookers are eager to see how Overpass develops from here for trainer Bjorn Baker.

Big races have become part of the fabric at Ascot in recent years and the Quokka is one of the biggest draws on the calendar.

The 2024 edition of the race did not disappoint, with Overpass finding a way to win for Bjorn Baker and it is a horse that looks to have a bright future with many Aussie horse racing punters and online betting sites.

It was billed as one of the biggest contests of the Autumn and once again, the Quokka did not disappoint, with Overpass picking up a huge win for connections and many Aussie bookmakers

Trained by Bjorn Baker, plenty has been expected over Overpass for the past few seasons and the 5-year-old was able to find a turn of speed when it mattered most to clinch the handsome prize pot.

Looking ahead through 2024 and beyond, onlookers are intrigued to see how far Overpass can go and if this Quokka win is a spring board to further successes.

Overpass, Over the line

Winning has become a serious habit for Overpass, who has triumphed in each of its last 4 outings.

Whilst trial runs aren’t necessarily a great barometer for punters, winning is a habit that is hard to snap out of and Overpass looks to be very much in the zone currently.

Having won the Winterbottom Stakes back in December at Ascot, connections will have been delighted that Overpass was able to back it up here in the Quokka, a race that has a unique sense of status within the Australian racing calendar.

Big win for Baker

Trainer Bjorn Baker was visibly delighted that Overpass had managed to get the job done in a race with the grandeur of the Quokka and he will want to see more of the same from his flyer moving forwards.

Overpass has looked the part in recent weeks, in what has been a very good spell for Baker and his pool of runners, and he will be desperate to kick on and have a strong finish to the year.

With plenty of big races ahead and a lucrative summer of action on the horizon later in the calendar year, Baker will be hoping to keep churning out the winners and he is certainly a trainer to watch for all punters and Australian horse racing online betting sites

Agony for Ameila

For all the plaudits being directed at Overpass, it was another disappointing outing for Amelia’s Jewel, who came up short in a big contest once again.

Overpass just looked to have the legs throughout the 1200m contest and kicked on when it mattered, a sign of a horse and jockey in form.

September 2023 was the last time that Amelia’s Jewel managed to win a race and whilst she is only 4 years old, she remains one of the most talked about horses in the land, who needs to start winning races more regularly in the eyes of many punters and horse racing betting apps.

The Quokka is one of the biggest races on the Australian calendar and it was the Bjorn Baker trained Overpass who got the job done for connections.

With another A$2 million in the bank, Overpass has produced the goods for Baker and his yard in recent times and it looks to be a horse capable of great things in 2024 and beyond.
