Race 6: Rose of Kingston Stakes

In a card adorned with plenty of Group 1 & 2 races, it is the Rose of Kingston Stakes in race 6 that catches the eye. The 1400m dash is a real test for some of the quickest horses around and with some high-quality operators in the field, there will be plenty of connections hoping to get their hands on the A$300,000 prize pot.

Rose of Kingston Stakes

All of the notable Australian betting apps will be fully on board for a race of this magnitude but in the eyes of many bookmakers, there looks to be only one winner.

6-year-old American horse Princess Grace has a fierce reputation as one of the quickest horses around and previous results have suggested it is a horse in good form.
Detractors will point at an underwhelming 4th place finish at Flemington a few weeks ago but that was in much stronger company and if Princess Grace can get going here, she could be tough to stop at $1.70 with Playup.

The aforementioned low-key showing from Princess Grace has brought some other runners and riders into the mix and Skew Wiff is a Kiwi horse, with bags of potential. Whilst lightly raced both at this level and over this distance, connections have very high hopes for the 4-year-old, and it certainly looks to be more than in with a shout at $8.00 with Bet365.

Finding challengers that can cope with both the pace and the quality of the opponents in this race doesn’t look to be an easy task but both Life Lessons and Ausbred Flirt have gone well recently and they can be backed at $11.00 and $14.00 respectively with Punterspal

Race 8: Turnbull Stakes

The only Group 1 race in a fascinating day of racing from Flemington this Saturday is the Turnbull Stakes, a contest that dates back to 1865.

With a rich alumnus of winning horses, trainers, and jockeys, the Turnbull Stakes has a unique footing in the world of Australian horse racing, and it promises to be another memorable contest in 2023.

A handsome A$500,000 makes up the prize pot and with plenty of prestige too, it is a race that creates traction with old and new betting sites alike.

Turnbull Stakes

Ran over 2000m, the Turnbill Stakes has long been a contest that keeps punters guessing with Aussie bookmakers  and whilst there are a couple of obvious front runners, there will be plenty of horses chasing glory in the Turnbull Stakes in 2023.

Topping the betting is Romantic Warrior, a horse that has torn up the form book in Hong Kong and arrives in Australia with a fierce reputation. For connections, the big race is the Cox Plate next month, but they will want to see the Warrior adapt to conditions successfully here.

There are plenty in the running with claims, but Romantic Warrior is the hot favourite for the Turnbull Stakes at $2.15 with Punterspal

Next in the running is Osipenko, a horse that will have no issue in adapting to running conditions at Flemington, having picked up an impressive 3rd place finish over course and distance less than a month ago.

The Kiwi 4-year-old does look to have an exciting future ahead of it and it could be ready to challenge Romantic Warrior all the way in this one at $6.50 with Playup.

Getting a read on the rest of the field is tricky, with plenty of international horses looking to make their way in Australia, following good spells back in their home countries. West Wind Blows (Ireland) and Soulcombe (UK) fit that bill and are two horses that look to have strong credentials and they may be worth each way punts at $7.50 apiece with Bet365.

Race 9: Gilgai Stakes

Perhaps the closest race in the ante-post betting ring is the Gilgai Stakes in race 9, another fascinating Group 2 contest. Yet another A$300,000 makes up the healthy prize pot and there are plenty of solid horses in contention here.

Ran over just 1200m, the Gilgai Stakes is a real speedsters dream and there are plenty of quick horses in the mix here, making the betting game a tricky one for punters and bookmakers alike.

Gilgai Stakes

A very open feel to the betting markets in the 2023 Gilgai Stakes is best represented by the horse at the very top of the betting.

Star Patrol is a proven performer, over both course and distance and with a 67% career placing record, it is a horse that has always delivered the goods. The question marks lie simply in the quality of the opposition, but Star Patrol is a very good horse, that should be firmly in the mix for Gilgai Stakes glory here at $2.60 with Bet365.

Next in the betting is Jigsaw, another horse with a seriously good track record, having won 5 of its last 6 starts, Whether it will be quick enough to see off Star Patrol at Flemington is a question mark but it should be a fascinating contest and Jigsaw can be backed at $4.40 with Playup.

The speedy options for punters don’t end there, with both C’est Magique and Triple Missile also offering strong claims over the 1200m dash. Pace will be the key question but both horses have mixed it in this company before and they can be backed at $7.00 and $10.00 respectively with Punterspal.
