AFL 2023 Round 16 – Betting tips & Predictions

AFL 2023 Round 1
AFL 2023 Round 16

As the regular AFL season approaches its final third, attention naturally turns to the sides at the top of the table.

Both Port Adelaide and Collingwood have been jostling for supremacy at the top of the AFL table in recent weeks and both sides face tricky looking away trips in game week 16.

Elsewhere, Brisbane and Melbourne will also be looking to keep pace, with home games against Fremantle and GWS respectively, whilst West Coast Eagles will be looking to climb away from wooden spoon territory.

Brisbane vs Richmond

Brisbane have been back to their free flowing best in the last couple of games and they will be eager to keep that form going as they host Richmond.

Defeats to Adelaide and Hawthorn at the start of the month saw them fall off the pace a little but emphatic wins over Sydney and St Kilda should give them a boost.

Richmond meanwhile are also in good nick; having won their last three games and they will be eager to put a run of form together and climb away from mid-table obscurity.

This should be an entertaining one, with both sides looking to play on the front foot, with the home advantage likely to be telling for Brisbane at the Gabba.

Sydney vs Geelong

Two sides locked in the mid-table battle face off at the SCG as Sydney host Geelong, with both sides eager to pick up a win.

Sydney have been showing serious signs of improvement in recent weeks and a play-off push will be very much on their agenda as the season draws to its climax.

Geelong meanwhile just cannot seem to find the consistency needed to maintain a serious push at the top of the tree but their win over Melbourne last time out was impressive.

Picking a winner here is a tricky one but Sydney are decent at home, and they could do with the points.

Adelaide vs North Melbourne

Adelaide will be looking to heap pressure on the sides above them, as they host a struggling North Melbourne side at the Adelaide Oval.

Hosts Adelaide find themselves in 8th place in the AFL table, but they will be all too aware that a couple of good results could boost them up into play-off contention.

North Melbourne meanwhile have really struggled this season, winning just two of their 14 games played and they have been well off the pace for much of the campaign.

This one looks likely to be one-way traffic, but Adelaide will need to warn against complacency if they are to pick up the win.

Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle

Two teams who are looking to break into the playoff mix in Western Bulldogs and Fremantle should be in for a right old ding, dong at Marvel Stadium.

Just one win from their last 4 games has stagnated any progress the Western Bulldogs made early on in the campaign but that victory over North Melbourne last time out should be a confidence boost.

Fremantle meanwhile are a side plagued with inconsistency, epitomised by 2 wins and 2 losses from their last 4 played.

The table doesn’t lie, and this should be a close one to call and it should be a thoroughly entertaining encounter.

Gold Coast vs Collingwood

Table topping Collingwood travel to Gold Coast for what should be an entertaining encounter.

When it comes to putting points on the board, few sides are as entertaining as Gold Coast, and they will be bang up for rattling into Collingwood here.

Just two losses from 14 games played tells the story for Collingwood, who along with Port Adelaide have been the outstanding team in the AFL this season.

This should be a classic but betting against Collingwood on current form does not seem wise.

Essendon vs Port Adelaide

Arguably the biggest fixture of the weekend pits Essendon against AFL title chasing Port Adelaide.

Essendon sit 6th in the table and have won 4 of their last five games but their defeat to Fremantle last weekend has checked their progress somewhat.

There have been no such issues for Port Adelaide this season, who keep trundling on in the title race and they know they will need to be at their best here.

Confidence is high in the Port Adelaide camp, and they should have enough to get over the line in this one.

Hawthorn vs Carlton

A basement battle is on the horizon at the MCG as Hawthorn host Carlton. Both sides have endured rough campaigns and taking on each other here should carry plenty of needle for both sides.

Hawthorn were absolutely thumped by Gold Coast last time out and they need a response here desperately. Carlton meanwhile hammered Goal Coast the week before and perhaps the bye last weekend came at the wrong time for them.

Neither of these two sides are in great nick and it could be a scrappy one, with no love lost.

Melbourne vs Greater Western Sydney

Fourth placed Melbourne take on Greater Western Sydney, with the home side looking to bounce back quickly from a string of poor performances.

Both sides will see this as a real chance to improve their current situations, with Melbourne on the cusp of a title battle and Greater Western Sydney eager to pull away from a basement battle.

Home advantage will of course be key for a Melbourne side that have plenty of attacking talent but completely writing off Greater Western Sydney wouldn’t be the wisest thing to do.

West Coast vs St Kilda

It has been a chastening campaign so far for West Coast, who find themselves cut way adrift at the bottom of the AFL table.

Things are not about to get easier for them, as they welcome a St Kilda side that reside in 5th place and who are looking to find form with the business end of the season very much approaching.

West Coast have conceded the best part of 400 points in their last two games and St Kilda will be licking their lips at the prospect of plenty of attacking footy here at Optus Stadium.
