Saturday Racing Tips – 26/08/23

The Carlyon Stakes is once again the talk of the betting rings in Australia, as the biggest owners, trainers, and jockeys jostle for position at Moonee Valley. 

With the class 1 race the 8th offering on an impressive 10 race card, there is plenty of movement to be had amongst Aussie bookmakers with domestic and international betting sites indulging in an excellent day of racing at Moonee Valley once again in 2023.

Testament to the prestige of the race card at the Valley on Saturday is the prize money across all of the races, with A$150,000 on the line in the Super Vobis Handicap in Race 3.

In a race for 3-year-olds only, the Super Vobis Handicap at The Valley houses some of the most exciting horses in the country currently. Having such lightly raced horses always poses a question mark for betting apps but there is some very established pedigree here at Moonee Valley and this should be an enthralling race. 

Topping the betting is Robrick, a horse that has always been earmarked for the very top. Winning over 1410m at Flemington at the start of August looked to be a sign of things to come and it should be firmly in the mix here at $2.60 with Playup.

As is often the way in races pitched for younger horses, that there are plenty of rough diamonds who could come good at any time and Fistsoffury is one of them. Another horse with solid wins in the book, conditions should suit here at The Valley, and it should be there or thereabouts at $4.50 with Bet365.

The unknown of a race for 3-year olds is underlined by the next horse in the betting, with El Poder Del Sol looking to be the relative enigma in this race. Finishing 4th at Flemington in its only showing doesn’t give punters much to go off but it is certainly one to keep an eye on in the markets at $5.50 with Punterspal. 

Elsewhere, Riproar looks to be a horse more than capable of mixing it at this level and it represents decent value at $6.00 with Playup.

Headlining the strong card at Moonee Valley is the Carlyon Stakes, a group 1 race that always has stellar flat racing pedigree. With $175,000 in the prize pot, there is plenty to get behind in the Carlyon Stakes, with an array of top horses all vying for glory.

Knowing where to start in a field as high quality as the one assembled in the Carlyon Stakes is no easy task, but Omni Man does look to be the justified pick at the top of the betting. Winning three of its last 4 outings, it is a horse made for this trip and it should take some stopping at $3.50 with Punterspal.

Not too far behind in the betting is Generation, another horse with serious pace at this level although recent results haven’t been anything to write home about. This is a slight move down in calibre for Generation, but it could still tear up the field at $3.90 with Playup.

Such is the prestige of the Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley, that there are plenty of horses that should be well in the hunt from the off and Acromantula and Sweet Ride fit that bill perfectly. Both horses have won at The Valley in their careers and they can’t be discarded at $4.20 and $7.00 respectively – both with Bet365

Another sizeable prize pot is available for the Boozebud Handicap in race 9 at Moonee Valley on Saturday, with A$150,000 in the pool. A handicap race for 4-year-olds, these races have a habit of showcasing some exciting young talent for owners and trainers.

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace always have their fingers on the pulse when it comes to quick horses and in St Lawrence, they look to have found a belter. The Kiwi has won 6 of its 7 starts, making it a firm favourite for this one here at Moonee Valley at $2.00 with Bet365.

Irish horse Deny Knowledge is on paper capable of pushing St Lawrence here, in a race that has the potential to be a belter. Deny Knowledge is a prolific performer, operating at a 48% place rate from 21 career outings and it shouldn’t be far away at $4.60 with Playup.

Value picks could be the way to go in this race, with such weight backing the favourites and Arran Bay and French Emperor are two picks that have serious credentials. Coming in at $6.50 and $9.50 respectively, both horses look to be in with a shot with Punterspal.
