Race 2: Caulfield Classic

With so many high-quality contests at Caulfield this weekend, it isn’t easy to choose the biggest races on the card, but the frenetic nature of the Caulfield Classic is always a favourite with punters and Aussie bookmakers alike.

Ran over 2000m, the Caulfield Classic is often a stern test for all of the horses involved and the handsome A$200,000 prize pot is more than enough to perk the interest of the biggest owners and trainers in the business.

Caulfield Classic

With only 8 horses in the mix, this looks to be a relatively open contest for most, with the 2000m race potentially stringing the minimal field out from the off. That said, there is one horse that stands out more so than others and Riff Rocket does look to be a cut above here.

Romping home over 1800m at Flemington just a fortnight ago is a real tick in the box for backers and with an 80% placing record from 5 career outings, the hype around Riff Rocket certainly looks to be justified and it will be tough to surpass at $1.50 with Playup

A horse that ordinarily would be a front runner in a contest such as this is Gold Bullion, a New Zealander that has plenty in reserve – especially when pushed over the 2000m mark. Riff Rocket is shaping the market, but Gold Bullion is a reputable operator, who also won at Flemington last time out over 1800m and it could be one to watch at $6.00 with Bet365

Finding horses that could realistically challenge in this one is no easy task but both Apulia and Gates are well accustomed to competing at this level. Both will need to up their speed to succeed here but they could be worth a go at $9.00 and $21.00 respectively with Punterspal.

Race 6: Caulfield Sprint

A change in pace comes in race 6, with the high-octane Caulfield Sprint taking centre stage. It is a contest that has often been the breeding ground for some of the fastest horses in Australia and beyond and once again in 2023, a stellar field has been assembled.

The 1000m dash is a Group 2 race, with a prize pool of A$300,000 and the fast and furious nature of the contest always makes it a sought after race, for old and new betting sites alike.

Caulfield Sprint

Only 7 horses will take to the starting blocks in the Caulfield Sprint in 2023, which presents both opportunities and pitfalls for punters. Raced over 1000m, the Caulfield Sprint very rarely sees the field spread out too far and there will be plenty who feel they have strong chances in this one.

Currently, the horse to beat looks to be Spacewalk, a James Cummings trained 4-year-old who has been prolific over this distance for the past 12 months or so. Wins in its last two outings at Warwick Farm and Royal Randwick will be doing plenty for it in the betting ring and with pace to burn, Spacewalk does look to have plenty of potential in this one at $2.70 with Punterspal.

Key competition comes in the form of Lofty Strike, a relatively experienced campaigner for its tender age of 4 and with over A$1 million in career earnings, the calibre of Lofty Strike is evidently apparent.

This will be a tall order, with so much high quality competition and over 1000m, the adage of anything can happen is particularly pertinent but with Damien Oliver on board, Lofty Strike should have a real chance here at $3.00 with Playup

With the race set to be over in a flash, any horse could pinch this and those with pace in reserve could be the ones to watch. Both Midwest and General Beau are pretty experienced at this level and whilst they will both need to put in improved showings, they should not be discarded at $8.00 apiece with Bet365

Race 9: Caulfield Cup

Headlining the card at Caulfield on Saturday will be the Caulfield Cup, the only Group 1 offering at Caulfield this Saturday and its whopping A$5 million prize pool will be attracting all of the biggest movers and shakers in the business.

Some of the biggest and best from Australia and beyond will be jostling for position over 2400m, making it a real test of stamina and fitness.

Caulfield Cup

Fresh off a win at the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington a fortnight ago, reigning Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip looks to be finding form once more in 2023. Some low key runs at the start of the season had the doubters lining up, but recent showings have suggested that Gold Trip could have another season to remember, and it is the favourite at $5.00 with Bet365

Next in the betting is Soulcombe, a British horse that has really found its stride in Australia of late. Finishing 3rd behind Gold Trip at Flemington only tells half the story, with Soulcome seemingly better suited to longer distances, which Caulfield will provide this weekend. It could be a horse that sneaks under the radar, but Soulcombe should be one to keep an eye on at $6.00 with Playup

There are plenty of options in the betting for the 2023 Caulfield Cup, with 19 runners set to take to the start line. Longer shot options form in the likes of Montefilia – a winner at Rosehill Gardens last time out, whilst Sprint Ridge is a British stayer that should relish the 2400m trip. Both will have to be on the top of their games, but they can be backed at $13.00 and $34.00 respectively with Punterspal
