Ivan Toney impresses on England bow against Belgium

News Insights

  • Brentford striker Ivan Toney scored his first England goal.
  • The Three Lions managed a 2-2 draw with Belgium but lost 1-0 to Brazil.
  • Toney was one of the standout performers for Gareth Southgate’s men.
  • He will be hoping to make the 23-man squad for Euro 2024.

It has been a tumultuous 12 months for Ivan Toney, who served an 8-month-ban from playing football.

The Brentford striker has been banging the goals in since the Bees were promoted to the top-flight.

Toney’s goals will prove crucial if Brentford are to stay up with EPL betting sites and on a personal level, he will be hoping to secure his spot at Euro 2024.

All in good time for Toney

With his gambling ban commencing at the back end of the 2022/23 campaign, Ivan Toney had to wait 12 months between his first and second England appearance.

Toney made his debut for the Three Lions in March 2023 against Ukraine, before donning the Three Lions shirt 12 months later against Belgium.

Toney took his chance, winning and scoring a penalty and he has certainly given manager Gareth Southgate a selection headache.

Competition up front

For all the plaudits rightfully coming the way of Ivan Toney, the fact remains that England captain Harry Kane is the number one striker in the country.

The Bayern Munich man was missing for the friendlies against Belgium and Brazil, but he will be desperate to be fit and firing at Euro 2024.

Toney, along with the likes of Ollie Watkins are vying for a place on the plane to Germany, to accompany Kane – as and when they are needed.

Something different

One of the reasons that England are the favourites for Euro 2024 with many punters and betting sites is their strength in depth.

Harry Kane needs no introduction but in Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney, England have two of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League in their ranks.

Toney’s physicality and presence will potentially give him something different in the eyes of Gareth Southgate’s coaching team and if Toney does end up going to Euro 2024, it would cap a remarkable turn around for the Brentford man.
