A busy few days in the Premier League continues this weekend with the second lot of matches for the week, kicking off when Everton hosts Arsenal. Every team will play its second game within a three or four day period, and with just two games separating 4th from 10th we will likely look back on this week as pivotal in the context of league positions. Further up the standings, Liverpool continued to stretch their lead at the top with a 1-0 win over Everton, while despite a rare win for Ipswich Town, the bottom three looks locked in – though given they play 17th placed Wolverhampton this weekend, a second win in a row would at least make things interesting. Below, we take a look at those aforementioned matches, and the rest that make up Matchweek 31.

Everton vs Arsenal
Everton’s nine-game unbeaten run which stretched back to mid-January was finally broken by Liverpool during the week, though they were gallant in defeat, losing just 1-0 to a team that rarely leaves things to chance. But while it’s been a long undefeated stretch for Everton, they also haven’t won for a while having drawn their last four prior to the Liverpool game, and that loss made it five in a row and over a month-and-a-half since their last win. It won’t be easy to turn that around this weekend.
Arsenal has been struggling to score since loss of Kai Havertz, but they have done enough over the past couple of games to secure wins and solidify their spot in second, their most recent victory seeing them beat Fulham 2-1 during the week. But that was the first time in five EPL games in which they’ve scored multiple goals. Against a relatively resolute Everton unit, it’s easy to see them struggling to find the back of the net once again, and it would be no surprise to see this one end in a low-scoring draw.

Ipswich Town vs Wolverhampton
The race for relegation isn’t all that exciting, with Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton all losing virtually every week and opening up a big, unwanted gap in the bottom three. But Ipswich Town enjoyed a rare victory during the week, beating a disappointing Bournemouth for their first Premier League win this season, and with a game against the team they are seemingly futilely trying to run down this weekend, they could close the gap to two games with another win.
But the Wolves have been playing pretty well themselves, even without star Matheus Cunha. They have won two in a row and boast a 3-1-1 record over their last five, and despite their win during the week it’s hard to see Ipswich Town beating them. For the sake of the relegation race that would be the better result for neutrals, but Wolverhampton should be able to all but officially stamp the home team’s relegation papers with a win.

Crystal Palace vs Brighton and Hove Albion
These two teams endured probably the most disappointing results of the week. Crystal Palace entered a game with the hapless, bottom-of-the-table Southampton on the back of a three-game winning streak, but it was only courtesy of a 92nd minute equaliser to Matheus Franca that they were even able to secure a point with a 1-1 draw.
Brighton, meanwhile, were even worse. They have been just about the in-form team of the competition of late and entered their clash with Aston Villa on the back of four wins and a draw in their last five, a stretch which has put them right on the cusp of the top four. But against another team in a similar position, they put in their worst performance for some time and went down 3-0. That defeat, or more so the manner of it, was a big surprise, but Brighton remains within reaching distance of the top four. They need everything to go their way, but can do their bit this weekend with a tight win over Crystal Palace.

West Ham vs Bournemouth
West Ham is the most dour team in the league right now, and their run of low-scoring games continued with a 1-0 loss to the Wolves during the week. That made it six consecutive games with two goals or less scored, so you won’t be surprised to see one of our EPL tips for this game.
In contrast, Bournemouth have scored and conceded plenty of goals of late, and during the week even managed to hand a couple to the woeful Ipswich Town en route to a really consequential loss. That all but ended their top four hopes, but with a mathematical possibility still there they will be keen to bounce back with a win. Don’t expect many goals, but the visitors should take the three points.

Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa have had some month. In their last six games, they have won a Round of 16 Champions League tie 6-1 on aggregate, advanced to the FA Cup semis and gone 2-0 in the Premier League. In that time, they have scored their opponents 15-1, with their 3-0 victory over the in-form Brighton during the week the icing on the cake, particularly with Marcus Rashford scoring his first goal in his new colours. Now just a game out of the top four, they are a realistic chance of requalifying for the Champions League – though they won’t have an easy time of it this week.
Nottingham Forest appeared a few weeks ago to have fallen off a cliff, but they have climbed back up it with three consecutive wins. The latest was a hard-fought 1-0 defeat of Manchester United, a lead they defended all game after scoring in the 5th minute, but Aston Villa will pose a little more of an offensive threat this weekend. This should be a quality game between two good teams with their tails up, and it would be no surprise to see them walk away from it sharing the points.

Tottenham vs Southampton
It hasn’t been the easiest of years for Tottenham, and though they have saved a little face over the past month or two they are still not where they want to be. Their goal difference would say they’re a lot better than their record suggests, however, and they get as good an opportunity as there is in the Premier League to give it a bit more of a boost this weekend.
Southampton is the worst team in it by some margin, though they did secure a rare point again Crystal Palace during the week. That was very nearly an even rarer win – what would have been just their third of the season – but a 92nd minute goal spoiled that chance. But it’s hard to see them adding to their measly season points tally of ten in this game. Expect an easy victory for Tottenham against the worst team in the league on their home turf.

Brentford vs Chelsea
Both Brentford and Chelsea have endured an erratic run of results, and while that has left Brentford stuck in no-mans land in the middle of the table, Chelsea are in a tight tussle for spots in the top four and five a little further up the standings. Brentford comes into the game on the back of a 2-1 loss to Newcastle, a game in which they went down 1-0, tied things up only to quickly concede a lead once again. That began a really difficult stretch of games for them, with Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and then Nottingham Forest all awaiting in the coming weeks.
Chelsea have been up and down all season, but they remain right in the mix for the top four. They come into this game having played on Thursday night, but even without much rest they will be backing themselves to get the chocolates. Brentford should be competitive, but this looks like a good opportunity for the visitors to pick up another pivotal three points.

Fulham vs Liverpool
Fulham have done well to put themselves legitimately in the conversation for a spot in the top four this season, but a tough run of games in recent weeks has put them up against it. They went down 2-1 to Arsenal during the week, their third loss in five games putting a two-game gap between them and the top four, and it’s hard to see them closing that this weekend.
It's now been over five months since Liverpool last lost in the Premier League, and there have not been many draws along the way either. They continued on their merry way during the week, overcoming a stoic Everton to win 1-0 and maintain a 12-point gap over Arsenal at the top of the standings. Fulham in Fulham is not an easy matchup, but it is impossible to tip against a Liverpool win against anyone at the minute, whether it’s being played home, away or on the moon. Expect another hard-fought win for the inevitable champs.

Manchester United vs Manchester City
Everyone is well aware of just how disappointed Manchester United’s season has been, but a win over their cross-town rivals this weekend would at least cheer them up for a few days. A rare run of form which had seen them win two and draw two over their last four came to an end during the week with a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, but expect them to quickly put that in the rearview mirror as they prepare for a clash with City in a season which has provided very little joy.
Unfortunately for United, however, their neighbours are a far better team than they are at the moment. Man City secured a relatively easy but pivotally important win over Crystal Palace during the week as they battle with Newcastle and Chelsea, among others, for top four spots, and they will be keen to say the least to prevent United from denting their Champions League chances. Expect, as always, plenty of fire at Old Trafford in this one, but City should be able to get the points.

Leicester City vs Newcastle
The run continues. Leicester City have now played in an incredible seven consecutive Premier League games without scoring a single goal, their latest result a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City during the week. That has been one of our EPL tips and predictions virtually every week and to great effect, so it should come as no surprise that it will once again headline this game’s tips.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have had a big week, celebrating their drought-breaking Carabou Cup win with a big celebration on the weekend and backing it up with a pivotal Premier League game a couple of days later. But clearly they’d overcome the hangover by Wednesday, with a 2-1 victory keeping them right on the edge of the top four. It’s going to be a thrilling run home for the teams hovering around those spots, and Newcastle are well-placed to advance their cause and potentially close the goal difference gap on their rivals with a big win.
