AFL 2025 Round 12

Round 12 action kicks off on Thursday when the Lions welcome the Bombers to the Gabba. The Magpies have retained top position on the ladder with 36 points. On the flip side, we see the Eagles, who have just one win so far this season and hold the unenviable last spot on the ladder.

Who will come out as a winner in Round 12? Let’s get stuck into some 2025 AFL predictions for Round 12 action!

Brisbane Lions vs Essendon Bombers

The second-placed Lions play host to the Bombers, who are sitting just outside the top eight, in 10th spot. Both teams were able to get back into the winner’s circle last time out, with the Lions beating the Hawks, 93-60, on the road and the Bombers winning against the Tigers, 81-58. It was a close battle for the Lions until just before half-time and then they seemed to run away with it.

All the key players seemed to step up for the Lions and I think they’ll enjoy being back at home, playing what looks on paper to be a much easier game. For the Bombers, it was a tightly fought match until they were able to run away with it in the final quarter. They have more injury concerns and the Lions look like the superior team, especially playing at home. This could be a blowout.

Collingwood Magpies vs Hawthorn Hawks

The top-of-the-table Magpies face off against the Hawks at the MCG on Friday night in what could be one of the matches of the round. The Magpies look set to welcome back a raft of players with the likes of Scott Pendlebury, Darcy Moore, Steele Sidebottom, Lachie Schultz and Bobby Hill all potentially returning in Round 12. This will be a massive boost for the team, who are favourites for this clash.

The Magpies are currently riding a three-game winning streak, with wins over the Dockers, Crows and Kangaroos. Meanwhile, the Hawks are looking to break a two-game losing streak, with losses to the Suns and Lions. The Hawks are a talented team, but with all the players coming back for the Magpies, it’s hard to go past them for this game. I’ll be playing it safe, taking the Pies to win.

Gold Coast Suns vs Fremantle Dockers

Both teams come into this clash looking to build on their current winning streak. The Suns are sitting in third place on the ladder and have notched up three wins in a row over the Bulldogs, Hawks and Saints. The Dockers are just outside the top-eight, in ninth spot and have back-to-back wins over the Giants and Power. The Dockers have won three of the last five against the Suns.

The Suns are finally back at home and I would expect they will be looking to put on a great performance for their home crowd. The Dockers also don’t seem to play that well on the road, so it sets this game up for a potential big win for the Suns. The line is currently set around the 16.5 mark, which I think is very fair and I think we’re looking at a win by over 30 points for the Suns.

GWS Giants vs Richmond Tigers

The Giants are right on the cusp and are currently sitting in eighth position on the ladder, thanks to a 28-point win over the Blues at Marvel Stadium last time out. That was Toby Greene’s 250th match and the Giants celebrated it in style. Now, they get back to Sydney and will play in front of their home crowd for what will be another must-win match. This looks to be a much easier match though, especially at home.

The Tigers are sitting down in 16th position and have lost four of their last five games. Now, the Giants haven’t exactly been consistent this season, but hopefully, they have a platform to build upon after their victory last game. The Tigers will be without Sam Lalor and Thomson Dow for this game, but it looks like their captain, Toby Nankervis, is available to return. Even with their captain back, this looks to be an uphill battle for the Tigers.

Sydney Swans vs Adelaide Crows

It looks as though the Swans are circling the drain. Yes, they’ve had to deal with a lot of injuries this season, but it seems like only a couple of players actually turn up on game day. Last year’s Grand Finalists have been very inconsistent this season and have won just two of their last five games. Last time out was a 53-point thumping at the hands of the Demons, who are also sitting outside the top-eight.

The Swans may be playing at home, but the Crows are in the top four and look like a much more complete team. Last time out, they took down the Eagles 128-62. Dean Cox will look to make a host of unforced changes for the Swans in this game. The Crows didn’t suffer any injuries from their last game and they look set to welcome back Taylor Walker. The Swans have won the last five games against the Crows, but I think it all changes on Saturday.

Melbourne Demons vs St Kilda Saints

We head to Alice Springs for the first Sunday game of Round 12, where we see the Demons face off against the Saints. The Demons have been running hot as of late and have won five of their last six, with their only loss in this time coming against the Hawks. Last time out, the Demons got one up against the Swans, 131-78 and the win before that was over the Lions, who are currently sitting in second place on the ladder.

It’s a different story for the Saints, who seem to be floundering around and they have lost four of their last five. The Saints are currently on a three-game losing streak after going down to the Blues, Eagles and Suns. The trip to Alice Springs is never easy and it’s a day game as well, so conditions will likely come into play here. Based on recent form, I have to go with the Demons.

West Coast Eagles vs Geelong Cats

Things look to be going from worse to even worse for the bottom-of-the-table Eagles, who have lost All-Australian Jake Waterman due to injury. For the final game of Round 12, they welcome the Cats, who are sitting just outside the top four, in fifth. It’s looking like a long night for the Eagles, who after getting their first win of the season over the Saints, were given a reality check, courtesy of the Crows, 62-128.

The Cats will be looking to build on their two-game winning streak on Sunday as they already have wins over the Power and Bulldogs. The trip over to Perth isn’t always the easiest, but it is really difficult to see anything other than a victory for the Cats, who do have an aging roster, but enough star power in the wings to make up for that. In the last three games between these two teams, the Cats have won by 85, 47 and 93 points, respectively.
