Dating back to the 1800’s, the County Championship has often been regarded as the yardstick for cricketers the world over and it is back up and running in 2024.

It now has to compete in a congested international cricketing landscape, but the appeal of the County Championship remains, and it should be a fascinating season.

Surrey have been a force to be reckoned with over the past couple of seasons in the County Championship, winning the title in both 2022 and 2023.

As the 2024 campaign gets underway, the side from the Oval remain the hot favourites to lift the title once again this season with many cricket betting sites, but there promises to be plenty of thrills and spills along the way.

A unique backdrop to the season of having the T20 World Cup in the summer will also have an impact on many counties, who will see their best players shipped off to the USA and the West Indies for a month of high-octane action.

Strong Surrey

As one of the most notorious and reputable counties in English cricket, Surrey sitting at the top of Division 1 of the County Championship has become a familiar sight over the years.

Their squad is packed with English talent, with the likes of Dom Sibley, Ollie Pope and Rory Burns all having racked up the runs for England over the years, whilst Sam and Tom Curran are a formidable duo with the ball in hand.

Strength in depth is very much evident in their ranks too, with some superb players waiting in the wings and Surrey will take some stopping again this season.

International icons

The allure of the County Championship remains as strong as ever, not just in the UK, but all across the world.

Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon and Marnus Labuschagne are just 3 of the Australian stars lining up in the County Championship this season, all looking to keep their eyes in ahead of a busy Aussie Test summer.

Elsewhere, South African stalwart Dean Elgar, Indian supremo Cheteshwar Pujara and Pakistan captain Shan Masood are all plying their trade in County cricket in 2024, testament to the appeal of the competition.

Promotion push

Whilst Surrey remain the team to beat in Division 1, there are 8 sides in Division 2 that will be vying to achieve promotion to the top tier.

Yorkshire, complete with the likes of Joe Root and Harry Brook in their ranks are one of the sides desperate to push back into Division 1.

Meanwhile, the likes of Middlesex, Sussex and Derbyshire will be leading the charge to climb into Division 1 at the end of the campaign with many cricket betting sites

The English summer may not be too present in terms of weather, but the return of the County Championship is a sure indicator that summer is coming.

Surrey have been the team to beat over the past few seasons, but with plenty of Australian interest in the County Championship in 2024, it promises to be a fascinating year ahead.
