NRL 2023 Round 19

Round 18 is in the books and what a bizarre round it was. Just 6 weeks after conceding 66 points to the Tigers, the Cowboys thrashed them 74-0, while the Knights also went out and demolished the Bulldogs 66-0. With the big wins behind us, we look forward to round 19, our final major bye round for the year. Stay tuned as we help you find value across all 5 games this week.

Tigers vs Sharks

Kicking off the round we have the Tigers hosting the Sharks. These two sides could not be coming off more contrasting weeks, with the Sharks putting 50 points on their rivals the Dragons for the first time, while the Tigers suffered the biggest defeat in NRL history, losing 74-0 to the Cowboys. The Sharks have found some great form of late, winning their last 2 games. Their right edge has formed some great combinations, particularly Nicho Hynes and Briton Nikora who look unstoppable. Despite this rich run of form, the Sharks remain unimpacted by Origin, with Nicho Hynes missing out.

The Tigers have looked abysmal lately, losing 4 in a row. They are without Koroisau and Brooks, the 2 key organizers in this team and it really shows. They look completely disjoint, a real shame for a side that showed great promise at times this season. The Sharks should be far too good for a battered and bruised Tigers side.

Dragons vs Raiders

Our only game on Friday night sees the Dragons host the Raiders. The Dragons are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Sharks while the Raiders are coming off a 4-point win against the Titans. The Dragons looked good for the first 20 minutes last week, going toe to toe with the Sharks but quickly they were outmatched. This Dragons side has been struggling this year, with the majority of their attack coming through Ben Hunt. With Hunt playing State of Origin this week, the Dragons will need to improve tremendously to compete with this Raiders side.

The Raiders lose only Horsburgh to Origin who is a significant loss but can be covered. The Raiders have showed tremendous fight this year, with them having a tremendous ability to win close games. They sit in 5th spot on the ladder despite their -65-point difference, worse than all teams sitting 11th and above. While the Raiders once again should be too good here, with their depleted forward pack with Papalii and Horsburgh out, I can see this one being a low scoring, competitive affair.

Eels vs Warriors

Kicking off a shortened Super Saturday we have the Eels hosting the Warriors. The Eels will be well rested coming off a bye, while the Warriors will be looking to make amends for their 28-6 loss at home to the Rabbitohs. The Eels have been in incredible form coming into this one, winning 5 on the trot, while the Warriors had won their previous 3 before last week. The Eels rich run of form will cost them this week, as RCG, Moses and Gutherson have all been selected for the Blues. The Warriors on the other hand miss nobody to Origin.

While fully fit I would give the edge to the Eels here, without Moses and Gutherson, their attack will struggle. Moses and Gutherson are the 2 primary creators and organizers of the Eels and without them they will look like a completely different side. I expect Shaun Johnson and the Warriors to make this one look relatively easy in a must win game if they want to make finals.

Rabbitohs vs Bulldogs

Our second and final game on Saturday sees the Rabbitohs hosting the Bulldogs. The Rabbitohs are coming off an impressive victory away to the Warriors while the Bulldogs are coming off an embarrassing 66-0 loss to the Knights. There is no doubt here than fully fit the Rabbitohs are the far superior side, but they are nowhere near full strength. The Rabbitohs are without Latrell Mitchell, Campbell Graham and Jai Arrow to injury as well as Cody Walker, Damien Cook, Keaon Koloamatangi and Cameron Murray to Origin.

These are arguably the Rabbitohs 7 most important players and without them they are a fully different side. The Bulldogs should be pretty much at full fitness, and after coming off such a poor performance, I am expecting them to turn up and ambush the Rabbitohs here.

Titans vs Dolphins

Our final game of the round sees the Titans host the Dolphins. The Titans are coming off a brutal loss to the Raiders, thanks to a no-try called on David Fifita at the end of the first half, while the Dolphins fought valiantly despite losing to the Broncos. The Titans will be significantly undermanned this week, with Brimson, Fifita, Tino and Fotuaika all being called up into the Queensland squad. These are 4 of the Titans most influential players, and while they can cover Brimson with Campbell, their pack will be severely below full strength.

The Dolphins on the other hand only lose Tabuai-Fidow to Origin and their forwards should be similar to last week. While fully fit, the Titans pack is one of the strongest in the competition, with their outs for Origin, I think the Dolphins may dominate this one through the middle and come away with the upset victory.
